New Paintings

I decided to let my students choose their own projects which sounds great at first but they soon realize how difficult that is.  So my response is ...

Begin with where you are most comfortable.  

Begin with what you are most interested in.  

Begin with what you are the most curious about.  

Begin with what you would like to be better at.  

Begin with an old idea that never went anywhere.  

Begin with someone else's work that has inspired you.  

Begin with something you heard in the news.  

Begin with something you are reading in another course.  

Begin.

Collage & Poetry

One IB 12 student is exploring collage/painting and poetry (T.S. Elliot and Shakespearean sonnets).   She has made a series of small 8 x 10 images that I think are quite intriguing.

Stories - IB 11

Students are required in IB Art to research artists that are relevant to their own work along with other documentation of their process such as technical practice, preliminary drawings, reflections etc.  For this project the theme was story and the artists that we looked at thanks to Art 21 (amazing site!) were Kiki Smith, Trenton-Doyle Hancock, Kara Walker and Do-Ho Suh.  I have them research two of the four artists after watching the videos by Art 21 and then produce a work of art in a medium of their choice that implies a story. Their final piece should suggest a narrative but leave room for the viewer to enter and create their own interpretation as to what the work is really about.  The story is just the starting point and students are encouraged to not illustrate a scene from a story but make art that has visual impact that is rich with narrative possibilities.  Their story can be autobiographical, fictional, satirical, mythological, fantastical, fact and/or fiction etc.  Here I'm showing two students work along with a couple of their sketchbook pages that are connected to their final pieces.

Painting Portfolio

A few paintings from Jenny's painting portfolio.  Over the course of the past two years she has completed over 500 art projects ranging from pencil drawings, paintings and sculpture.

LANDSCAPES

I tried something different this year with my Level 1 art students.  After looking over many examples of the different styles and approaches artists use to paint landscapes, I asked the students to choose one element from three different paintings (e.g. how an artist portrayed clouds from one painting, trees from another, mountains from another etc.) and incorporate those elements into their original landscape composition.  For the most part this pretty well addressed the default compositions and stylized representations of sun, trees, mountains etc. and also avoided doing a direct copy of someone else's painting.  After their compositions were completed then they were to choose a colour scheme (monochromatic, analogous, complementary, warm, etc.) that dominated their painting.
